When Does Your Business Need a New Website? 9 Signs Not to Ignore

Not every old website needs to go. But some signs show the site is costing you more than it gives back.

October 2026 · 7 min read

Plenty of business owners have a website they had built a few years ago. They pay for hosting every year and don't think about it much. The site "exists". The trouble is that customers don't see it the way you do. They open it on a phone, in the middle of the day, with little patience, and within a few seconds they decide whether to trust you.

This article isn't here to talk you into a new website. Often a fix is enough. But some signs show a site has reached its limit, and the longer you wait, the more enquiries you lose without knowing it.

1. On a phone it looks like a shrunken desktop page

Open your site on your phone right now. If you have to pinch to read, if the buttons are so close you tap the wrong one, or the menu runs off the screen, that's the clearest sign of all. Most visitors arrive on a phone today, so this isn't a technical detail. It's the first impression.

2. It loads slowly

If the page thinks for a few seconds before showing anything, some visitors leave before they see it. The usual causes are heavy images, unnecessary plugins or cheap hosting. Some of that can be fixed without a new site; some of it, like a bloated old WordPress theme, can't. More on that in our guide to website speed.

3. Every small change takes weeks

Opening hours change, you add a service, you want a new photo, and the change shows up days or weeks later. Or worse, the person who built it no longer replies. When a small edit takes a week, the site starts falling behind the business, and outdated information is worse than none.

4. The information is out of date and nobody noticed

Prices from 2022, a phone number nobody answers, services you no longer offer. A customer reading it can't tell which part is accurate, so they doubt all of it. If you catch yourself telling customers "don't look at the website, it's not up to date", the site is working against you.

5. Visitors don't immediately understand what you do

Try a simple test: show your homepage to someone who doesn't know you for five seconds, then ask what your business offers and where you are. If the answer is vague, the problem isn't the visitor. Older sites often open with "Welcome" and a big meaningless photo instead of one sentence that says clearly what you do and for whom.

6. There's no easy way to contact you

The number is hidden at the bottom, the form has twelve fields, there's no WhatsApp. Every extra step loses people. A customer who's ready to write shouldn't have to search for how.

7. The browser says "Not secure"

If the address doesn't start with https and the browser shows a warning, many visitors close the page straight away. This is usually a quick fix with an SSL certificate, but if it hasn't been fixed by now, it often means nobody is looking after the site.

8. Nobody finds you on Google by the name of your service

People find you when they type your business name, but not when they search "dentist in Durrës" or "electrician Pristina". There can be many reasons for that. Still, if the site has no clear headings, no text about your services and no sensible structure, Google has nothing to understand. That usually takes more than a small fix.

9. The business has changed, the website hasn't

You've opened a second location, started working with clients abroad, added services. If the site still reflects the business of three years ago, it speaks to customers you no longer have and stays silent in front of the ones you want.

Fix it or start over?

If you recognise one or two of the signs above, a fix is often enough: updated copy, optimised images, a WhatsApp button, SSL. If you recognise four or more, especially 1, 3 and 5 together, it usually costs less to start fresh than to keep patching something that wasn't built for how you work today.

Before you decide, ask whoever quotes you to explain why they recommend a fix or a new site. An honest answer is sometimes "you don't need a new website".
